It is a known fact that alloy wheels play a major role in improving the look and the functions of a car. Over the years there has been a growing concern over the maintenance of the alloy wheels since they have become more and more of a common feature in most cars .This has made car manufacturers opt for the installation of alloy wheels which are modified for stock cars. The notion that the alloy wheels and rims cannot be repaired is a misconception since they can actually be repaired to some great extent. The most common damages which the alloy wheels are prone to include the radial run out which affects tire balance across the diameter cracks. The radial run out’s repair depends on the location but it would be safer for one to opt for a replacement and the lateral run out which affects the tire balance from across the width. These damages do not only destroy the appearance of the wheel but on a broader picture, it destroys the driving performance of the car.
The casted alloy wheel are the recommended alloy wheels for repair, this is because the forged alloy wheels are tougher even to repair and more expensive and they consist in most cases refurbishing. 2-piece and 3-piece alloy wheels are at risk of damage since the outer lips are in most cases made of softer alloy materials. Warmer months make the ideal repair time and can take up to 5 hours but this is dependent on the damage, to minimize damage one should use high pressure for tires of low profile and ensure the tire wear is even. The installation of the alloy tires takes a short time but one should be well aware of the tire position. The first step would be to match the wheel and tire to the final position on the vehicle. Set each tire and wheel around the vehicle in the same manner as the race teams and pit stops. For the directional tires, one should use the rotation arrow which has been branded on the tire’s sidewall as it shows the direction the tire is supposed to turn. Asymmetrical tires should have a sidewall branding showing the side facing outward. For the directional and asymmetric tires, they have the branding indicated as ‘side facing outwards’ and feature rotation arrows that determine the side on which the tire should be placed.
The fist step is fitting the wheel in the final position. Avoid the use of power impact wrenches when removing bolts and lug nuts to remove since they may damage lugs. Fit the wheel to the vehicle’s hub; a centering ring may be required if it is not fitting well. Ensure that the bolt and the vehicle circle make full contact with the hub’s mating surface. To ensure that the bolt or lug thread sizes match, one should install bolts or lug nuts without the wheel. One may have to install the wheel temporarily by having the bolts and lug nuts snugged down. This is done to confirm the clearance of the brake caliper and the threading the lugs. Any resistance means there is an obstruction. Finally, put the transmission of the vehicle into neutral turning for each wheel while making sure the outer edge is not touching the rim insides or coming into contact with the wheel’s backside or weights. Repairing alloy wheels is a manageable task if the correct procedure is learnt and followed.
